How I Got My First 1,000 Sales (& You Can Too!)
When it comes to making sales, many experts tend to overcomplicate the rules. Oftentimes, you hear generic tips such as ‘focus on offering value’, ‘run ads to remain relevant’, or ‘build a personal relationship with every client to expand your customer base’. While these are all key tips, making sales doesn’t have to be so difficult. In fact, you do not always need a large following or expensive ads to make sales.
Many experts emphasize that the trick to making sales is having a ton of followers, but that isn’t true. I didn’t have 10,000 followers or run a single ad, yet I got my first 1,000 sales. In this article, we explore how a 17-year-old idea most people still ignore can help you increase sales and avoid the overwhelming urge to splash money on ads that do not convert.
The 1,000 True Fans Mindset
For me, it all started with the “1,000 true fans” mindset.
The “1,000 true fans” mindset was popularized by Wired magazine editor Kevin Kelly, who suggested that creators and entrepreneurs can build a sustainable living by nurturing a loyal community of 1,000 highly engaged fans.
I first stumbled on this mindset at the infantile stages of my business. Sales were low, business was slow, and I found myself growing increasingly frustrated with the cycle of chasing new followers, building engagement, and enjoying little to no conversion. This hustle culture left me burnt out with nothing to show for it.
However, after learning about the “1,000 true fans” mindset, I quickly figured out that to build a thriving business, you don't need millions of followers. Instead, you need 1,000 people who genuinely love what you do, enjoy the value you offer, and are committed to supporting you. These 1,000 people will continuously support your work by purchasing your products/services.
I tested out this idea and, over time, built a strategy that worked for me. Here's the strategy I used and how it can work for you, too.
The Strategy: What Actually Worked
Using the true fans mindset, I stopped chasing the dreams of breakout fame. Here's how you can use this mindset to make huge sales:
1. Create Products That Solve Real Problems
The first tip to being relevant in the market is to create a product or service that other people find useful. Don't just create any product. Focus on creating a product tailored to solve your specific audience's real-life problem. For me, that was the CORRECT™ Collection, a set of well-tailored tools and resources designed to help women entrepreneurs gain clarity, confidence, and results in their business. For you, it could be anything, regardless of your niche.
To do this, you can conduct a survey among your target audience. Ask questions, pay attention to their pain points, do research, and then center your products around their needs.
2. Build a High-Quality, Small Email List
To be relevant, you don't need to be known by everyone. You just need to be known by those who matter.
Instead of chasing numbers, focus on creating a small list of people who are genuinely interested in you and your brand. Build a connection with these people to foster long-term relationships. Treat them like members of a VIP club and provide exclusive information/services, value-driven content, or even an inside peek at what goes on with your brand behind the curtains. While you may be starting small, this small group will become loyal and offer a steady stream of engagement. Over time, your community of trusted audience will multiply as more people want
3. Use High-Quality Lead Magnets & Low-Ticket Offers to Build Trust
Most entrepreneurs use free lead magnets or low-ticket offers (LTOs) to generate leads for their sales funnel. But the problem is that most entrepreneurs don’t put a lot of effort or thought into the free or LTOs they create. But if you want to generate quality leads and get clients for a lifetime, your free or low-ticket stuff should have a high perceived value to build trust with your audience. If your freebies or LTOs are trash, no one will want to buy your mid to high ticket offers.
So make your lead magnets and LTOs high-quality. You can do this by leveraging lead magnets such as mini-courses that answer questions about your brand or offer valuable information that they can't get anywhere else.
4. Go Deep, Not Wide
Don't focus on mass exposure and converting every lead into a client. Instead, tune into your current audience’s emotions to build a relationship. Foster connection by making your audience feel special. You can do this by creating intimate Q&A sessions, responding to DMs, or sending out personalized emails. This will make your audience feel seen and loved.
5. Host Value-Driven Events
Everyone loves value, especially those that come free. Consider hosting value-driven events such as webinars and workshops on topics that your audience will find interesting and valuable. If you cannot make these events entirely free, consider making them low-cost.
6. Create Feedback Loops
After every event, don't just leave your audience hanging. Instead, nurture them by asking for feedback and offering clarity on any questions they may have. This will help you figure out what worked, what part of your event was unnecessary, and how to make these events better. Feedback loops are also great for tweaking your offers, improving your messaging, and making the average customer experience even better.
The Truth About The “1,000 True Fans” Strategy
Although many people will tell you that clout is excellent for making sales, this is not always true. In fact, after adopting this strategy and tailoring it to fit my brand's purpose, I noticed a steady increase in conversion rate.
With the “1,000 True Fans” mindset and strategy, you can easily generate a steady stream of income. This is because many of your audience will be loyal to your brand and become repeat customers. Most importantly, value attracts people, and your small community will grow slowly and steadily. This means more engagement, more sales, and no burnout from constantly chasing big numbers.
